New Website for FVA and a work in progress for Meandering Manatees

My, my another few months have gone by and it is time to let you know what is happening with our websites. FVA (Florida Volkssport Association) has been totally re-done and is even better than before, be sure to check out the State Park YRE's page it is a real doozy, click on any walk there and it will take you to a clear and concise explanation of where and what it is. Isn't that great?

As for Manny, he is being totally re-done as well, altho' he is not ready for publishing yet, can't wait for you to see him. He is looking really good. More info and better links this time too.

See you on the trails......

Another year.........eeek???

Oh my goodness, another year has gone and I haven't updated Manny's blog....shame on me. Well, I am going to try to fill you in on what's happening today.
This year the Fort Myers Walk along the Caloosahatchee River, McGregor Blvd. and Edison Park with features of the winter homes of Thomas A. Edison and Henry Ford, has changed just a little, there is a new start place...the new Publix Supermarket at 2160 McGregor Blvd. This walk is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter (the days Publix is closed), on Sundays, if you wish to take in the Edison Home during the walk (time permitting) it does not open until noon. Special classifications include Courthouses in the USA, Railroad Heritage, Riverwalk America.

The Punta Gorda walk was re-opened in May 2008, it starts at the Museum on the left inside Fisherman's Village, 1200 Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda, 33950. Due to Hurricane Charlie this walk is now along Charlotte Harbor and in the Historic Downtown Area, many of the 14 Historic Murals are included in the walk. Special classifications included here are Courthouses, Museums and Riverwalk America.

Venice and Highlands Hammock

New Years Eve day was a delightful day to do some walking, we had to hit a couple of the walks to update the information in the "walk box" and to see what, if anything, was needed to make these walking experiences more enjoyable and as stress free as possible. Everything appeared to be in order, so left our updates and went on our way. Highlands Hammock State Park campground was full to capacity, the picnic area was teaming with people and the "circle" had some activity as well, some bikes, some walking and some strollers. Some folks decided this was just a time to do just plain relaxing. Everyone was having a great time and the weather was just perfect.
Then on to Venice, update the walk box at the CVS at Venice Ave and US41 and a little tour of the walk route and Venice Beach, what a lovely walk that is. Some of the charm of the City of Venice and some of the historic parts and then on to the beach and the jetty. Water (Gulf of Mexico) was kind of choppy, but for the most part was very pretty, altho' a little windy. Lots of people checking it out and walking on the jetty. Some boats in the water and even a dolphin or two. Turned out to be a lovely day, really enjoyed it.
The link above will take you to the American Volkssport Association website and then choose a link from the column on the left, find a state and then a walking event and go for it. These walks make for a very enjoyable day and a healthy one too.

Three months later...

It doesn't seem like 3 months have passed since my last post...and the new year is upon us. We've done 3 organized walks, Cassadaga, FL, Halloween week-end, Ft Myers Beach, FL, a new YRE, and Oscar Scherer State Park YRE event, Thanksgiving weekend, two with the doggies and 1 without, unfortunately, pets are not allowed to walk on the public beach. There was an alternate route we could have used, but that way you miss most of the reason you are going in the first place.....oh well. Because of these walks and walking daily we have been able to loose some of our weight we gained while sitting behind a desk and eating snacks and drinking those sugary sodas. I am down 12 pounds and hubby is down 10, so at least something good has come from this. (during the holidays we've put some of it back on, but off it comes after the 1st.)
I hope some of you have found Volkssporting and enjoy it as much as we do...
See you on the trail...Would like to hear your experiences and those places you've walked or would like to....

Volkssporting is Healthy....

Volkssporting is healthy for you, your family and your pets. When you do a volksmarch, its a 10k or 6.2 mile organized walk, you walk, bike, or swim, although most of the events in the USA are for walking. First of all you find an organized walk in a location near you or if you choose you can travel to one. The way to find the location of a walk is to go to AVA.org, click on "Find Walking Events" and find the walk you want to do. Then you go there and sign in, pay or not, if you choose to walk for free you can do so, but you won't be able to get any of the goodies that are included in the nominal fee. If you are a member of AVA you have a couple of books that get stamped with the sanction number and the date. When you have done 10 walks you send them in and get a package of goodies in return as well as new books. There are several types of books too. One for State Capitals, one for Lighthouses, one for State Parks and the list continues to grow almost weekly.
So grab your other half, your pet, or just yourself and look for a walk in your local vicinity or somewhere else and get out and WALK, its good for you, its good for your pet and it is good for the environment....
